ARCHIVED - 252 deaths and 16,233 new cases; Spain Covid-19 on Thursday 19th November
Indications of stabilisation are improving day by day
The coronavirus situation in Spain continues to slowly improve, even though case numbers, hospitalisations and deaths remain high, there is a generalised feeling that this week has started to give real hope that the second wave is starting to slowly recede.
Where a clear cycle change has been seen for the last two weeks is in the accumulated incidence figures, calculated using the number of cases per 100,000 of the population, over either 7 or 14 days.
If the figure for 7 days is less than half of the 14 day rate, then the tendency is downwards and vice versa.
This Thursday the 16,233 positives that the Ministry of Health has - more than 3,000 cases less than last Thursday – help to further push down the incidence curve.
This Thursday, the incidence across 14 days has fallen by 3.6% compared to the previous day, reaching 436.27 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, one of the most pronounced daily decreases in more than a month. The fall is generalized throughout the country, with the exception of Asturias and Cantabria, where transmission remains in the ascent.
"Although it is true that the trend is very favorable," said Fernando Simón, director of the Ccaes during the press presentation, "they are still very high figures, well above the targets we have set."
The highest number of new cases by region reported this Thursday have been Andalusia (3,315), Valencian Community (2,207), Catalonia (2,115) and Castilla y León (1,861).
Hospitalisations:
Although numbers of cases help to give an indication of how the virus is spreading, the figures which most concern the health service are the numbers of hospitalisations, which normally rise 1-2 weeks after infections are detected.
On Monday admissions rose less than usual after the weekend and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday there have been clear declines in the level of hospitalisations across the country. The latest total of hospitalized patients with Covid is 18,961, 442 less than on Wednesday, and almost 1,500 less than at the beginning of the week. The average occupancy is 15.2% throughout the country.
In the case of intensive care, the signs are less clear. For six days, the number of patients admitted with severe Covid seems to have stabilized at around 3,120 and on Tuesday the first daily decrease in seriously ill patients in more than a month was observed. There are currently 3,125 coronavirus patients admitted to the ICU (five more than on Wednesday), occupying an average of 31.6% of the available beds.
At least two autonomies, La Rioja and Aragón -with 58.3 and 52.3% occupancy respectively- have more than half of their available beds dedicated to Covid patients and three other regions -Asturias, Castilla y León and Cataluña - exceed 40% occupancy.
Fatalities:Although the number of deaths notified daily is prone to frequent ups and downs, this Thursday the Ministry has reported 252 deaths across Spain, the lowest figure since November 3rd, another positive indicator of a slow stabilisation.
The Government is concerned to make sure that the downward trend is maintained and has today announced the formation of a committee to review restrictions ahead of the Puente de la Concepción at the beginning of December and the festive season ahead, determined to avoid a third wave after the festive season.
