ARCHIVED - Agriculture department donates experimental cherries to Cáritas charity in Caravaca de la Cruz
The cherries were grown at the experimental plantation at the Agrarian Development Centre located in Las Nogueras
The General Directorate of Agriculture, Food Industries and Agrarian Cooperativism in the Region of Murcia has donated more than 160 kilos of cherries to three Cáritas centres in the municipality of Caravaca de la Cruz.
Cáritas is a charitable organization run by the Catholic church with more than 165 branches across Spain. Their objective is to provide services, supplies and assistance to the population in order to diminish poverty, exclusion and discrimination.
The Cáritas centres given the donation are those located in the municipality in the San Francisco, El Salvador and La Purísima Concepción convents.
The cherries had been grown experimentally in the Agrarian Development Center on the Las Nogueras farm, which is located on the Caravaca-Lorca road and occupies 15,640 square metres.
This farm is used for research, training, experimentation and conservation purposes. Some of the trees currently being studied are hops, cherry trees, apricot trees, late-flowering almond trees, apple trees, persimmon trees and more.
The work carried out on the Los Nogueras experimental farm is mainly aimed at introducing new crops or new varieties of existing crops into the Region, helping the agricultural sector to find varieties which crop better, tolerate changing weather conditions or have higher resistance to pests, all of which is contributing to maintaining employment in the sector.
