ARCHIVED - 14 deaths, but lower number of covid cases in Murcia on Sunday
Only 428 new cases were reported on Sunday
The number of new covid cases reported on Sunday was considerably lower than last week, with just 428 new cases in the 24 hour period between midnight on Friday and midnight on Saturday (figures always reported the following day).
This is due in no great part to the low number of PCR tests undertaken; only 3,761, but the percentage of positives was also a lot lower than in the previous week, yielding 11.3% positives as opposed to figures of around 15% which were normal last week. This is the fourth consecutive day on which the percentage of positive cases has been lower than last week.
The number of hospitalizations also fell slightly, although the deaths continued at the high rate of the last two weeks, with 14 fatalities in the 24 hour period.
Numbers of cases in the north and north-west of the region have been growing markedly in the last few days, a series of outbreaks all due to social gatherings. It’s noticeable that the same municipalities which have experienced major outbreaks in the last few weeks continue to hover near to the top of the lists of new cases every week, Totana, Lorca and Fuente Álamo all struggling to shake off the virus in spite of the continued restrictions put in place.
Murcia City has consistently been amongst the municipalities with the highest number of cases due to the size of the population and this was no different on Sunday when the Murcia City municipality reported 126 cases. Yet again Totana seems to be struggling and reported 40 new cases, Yecla in the far north has recently experienced a sudden surge and reported 30 cases. Caravaca with 19 and Cehegín (18), are both areas of the north-west which are suddenly surging forward, but poor old Lorca is another area which has been in the eye of the storm for weeks and had started to improve significantly about 10 days ago, but suddenly is becoming a “problem” municipality again, reporting 30 cases.
A further 27 have been allocated to Cartagena, 21 to Alcantarilla, 17 to Jumilla, 16 to Torre Pacheco, 13 to Molina de Segura, 11 to Alhama de Murcia, 8 to Fuente Álamo, 6 to La Unión, 5 to Mula and 5 to Pliego, the remainder spread around the region in lower numbers.
Fatalities:
We were warned weeks ago that as case numbers rose, so would the deaths and the fruit of what was sown 2-3 weeks ago when the cases started to rise sharply is now feeding through as predicted. 14 deaths were reported during this 24 hour period, four females and 10 males, aged 84, 82, 79, 64, 91, 77, 89, 70, 93, 77, 85, 80, 92 and 77. Four of the residents were from Murcia City, two from Cehegín, two from Cieza and one from each of Ceutí, Fortuna, Alguazas, Caravaca and Molina de Segura. Their deaths bring the regional total up to 488.
Hospitalisations;
There was a little easing of pressure on the health system with 18 patients less in general covid wards, bringing the total down to 608. The highest point of the week was on Wednesday (and to date so far in the pandemic) when the total reached 632. The total in intensive care remained high at 104.
11,688 patients remain in home isolation with mild symptoms.
Recoveries: On Sunday more people were given the all-clear than new cases were reported, so the number of active cases fell, dropping to 12, 296 and bringing the total number of patients recovered to 33,886.
