ARCHIVED - 182-year-old windmill restored to working condition in Torre Pacheco
The Molino del Tío Facorro is known to have been standing at least since 1838
Work has almost been completed in Torre Pacheco on the windmill known as “El Tío Facorro", with 48,000 euros having been spent on returning the structure to a fully operative condition and thus restoring an important part of the agricultural heritage of the Campo de Cartagena.
The windmill in the north of the town centre, close to the municipal indoor swimming pool, has been declared an Item of Cultural Interest, and the project aims to preserve the original machinery inside, repair damaged parts and reconstruct those elements which were missing or unusable due to the deterioration in their condition. This is just one of 15 windmills in the municipality of Torre Pacheco and over 200 in the whole of the Campo de Cartagena, and it was acquired by the Town Hall 30 years ago.
Among the elements which have had to be replaced in their entirety is the 13-metre pole which is used to swivel the sails around in order to catch the wind, while the original parts which remain in place have had to be treated for woodworm, termites and generalized fungi and this treatment will continue for another two years.
The first documented reference to the structure is dated 1838, making the “El Tío Facorro” at least 182 years old. The main body of the mill reaches a height of 11 metres and the only work remaining to be completed, apart from the ongoing treatment of the wood, is the repainting of the exterior
