ARCHIVED - 25 rubbish containers among flood debris removed from the Mar Menor
Oxygen levels in the lagoon remain low and the effect on the marine environment has not yet been evaluated
As the clean-up continues after the destructive flooding caused by the “gota fría” storm in Murcia in mid-September, and with the focus gradually shifting from the towns worst affected, including Molina de Segura, Los Alcázares and Los Nietos, to the Mar Menor, it is reported that the beach cleaning teams and those on board the Limpiamar boat financed by the regional government have so far removed 4,200 cubic metres of debris including 25 rubbish containers.
90 cubic metres of the rubbish retrieved after it was washed into the lagoon by torrential rain and floodwater relates to organic matter including reeds, large branches and even some whole trees. Many of these have been winched onto the Limpiamar under the supervision of two professional divers, while along the shore of the Mar Menor the beach cleaning teams have been using machinery to collect and process biomass.
Speaking at the first meeting of the Inter-administration Mar Menor Co-ordination Forum since the storm, Antonio Luengo, the minister for the environment in the Murcia government, also confirmed that the water quality in the lagoon is currently much worse than before the gota fría, and that unfortunately “the patient is back in intensive care”. On the one hand the amount of chlorophyll in the water has dropped back to around 3 or 4 micrograms per litre, having shot up to over 30 immediately after the heavy rain, but on the other hand the oxygen level in the water is still very low.
Sr Luengo added that the consequences of this shortage of oxygen for marine flora and fauna have not yet been evaluated, but it can be assumed they are not positive.
