The company Davidwine, which sells 350,000 bottles of locally produced wine from Jumilla a year, most of them in China and the Far East, has been partly acquired by the Chinese online marketing group Xiamen SUOEI with the intention of converting it into the largest foreign wine seller in the country.
David wine was founded in 2011 by David Hernández Zapata, who arrived in the Far East with 12,000 euros in his account and just 200 bottles. Since then growth has been exponential, and Sr Hernández’s decision to part with a 45 per cent share in the company reflects his belief that a traditional business like wine-making must necessarily move with the times.
Last year the turnover of Davidwine reached 8 million euros, selling through over 1,300 distributors in various Asian markets, and this year the company was chosen as a “business case” by the prestigious China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), considered to be among the 5 best institutions of its kind in the world. Davidwine has also sponsored events such as the ATP tennis tournament in Shenzhen, the Guangzhou fashion week and the Shanghai film festival.
Earlier this year Sr Hernández Zapata published a book entitled “El murciano que desafió al dragón chino” (the Murciano who challenged the Chinese dragon”, recounting his experiences and explaining 12 keys to becoming successful in business in China.
