ARCHIVED - 56 migrants rescued off the coasts of Aguilas and Cartagena
The boats were intercepted off the Murcia coast carrying men, women and children
Five boats carrying a total of 56 Algerian migrants were intercepted off the coasts of Cartagena and Águilas within a few short hours of each other on Tuesday July 26. Officers from the Guardia Civil and Rescue and Maritime Security (Sasemar) ensured the safe return to shore of all the migrants.
In Águilas, emergency services located seven men in one dinghy in the Murcia waters shortly before the Sasemar Salvamar Draco vessel rescued another 13 people, 12 men and one woman in Cartagena.
Later in the day, three more boats were intercepted, travelling from the Algerian coast, with 36 passengers on board: 30 men, one woman and five children.
All of the rescued migrants are believed to be from Algeria and are reportedly in good health.
This latest influx of illegal immigrants comes just days after Murcia's emergency service rescued 8 boats in the space of 48 hours and earlier this week, a pregnant woman was one of several migrants brought to shore in Torrevieja.
