36 patients are in intensive care as hospitals scramble to increase their capacity
Analysts and health administrators in Spain appear to be of the opinion that the coronavirus pandemic in this country could be close to reaching its peak, but in the Region of Murcia, where the first case was reported later than in any other of Spain’s 17 regions, the numbers continue to rise sharply.
On Wednesday 25th March at 21.00 the regional health service (SMS) reported that during the day the number of confirmed Covid-19 cases had risen from 477 to 596, an increase of almost 25 per cent in just 24 hours, while the number of people admitted to hospital rose from 127 to 172. The coronavirus death toll in Murcia rose to 8, the latest fatalities being two men in their 80s who died in hospital in Yecla and in the Reina Sofía hospital in the centre of the city of Murcia. Both men suffered already existing medical conditions.
At the same time, as the night began there were 36 coronavirus patients in intensive care, and this is the area where the worries that resources could be insufficient are the most acute. Many of those included in the sharp rise on Wednesday were staff and residents at the Caser home for the elderly in Santo Ángel, where the number of cases confirmed has now risen to 20 following extensive testing after a man died on Monday.
On the other hand, as the coronavirus runs its course the number of patients given the all-clear in Murcia rose on Wednesday to 9.
Fears that the worst is just beginning in Murcia
Although the figures have risen sharply they are still very low in comparison to other areas of Spain, but with the upward curve steepening the Arrixaca hospital in El Palmar has created beds for 44 more adults in the area usually reserved for children, while at the Morales Meseguer hospital in central Murcia patients are to be housed in operating theatres which are currently not being used for their usual purpose.
In anticipation of further increases, plans to create an overflow field hospital outside the Arrixaca are advancing in collaboration with the armed forces, while five more hotels (now closed to guests) are preparing to welcome health workers and other emergency services staff (the Isla del Fraile in Águilas, Los Habaneros in Cartagena, Jardines de Lorca, El Churra in Murcia and Riscal in Puerto Lumbreras). Prior to this, other hotels in Caravaca and Yecla had already been put to the same purpose.
Despite these measures, though, there are fears that the region will struggle to cope with the anticipated rise in cases due to the numbers of health professionals already infected or quarantined, effectively putting more than 500 health workers out of action. 111 health service workers have been diagnosed as positive for coronavirus and a further 400 have been put in enforced isolation at home, having come into close contact with individuals who later proved to be infected and therefore contagious. All of these must undergo a quarantine period in order to remove the risk of them passing on the virus to health service patients.
The lack of resource was highlighted brutally on Monday when the regional government revealed that there are more than 7,500 suspected cases in the region which it has not been possible to test yet due to a lack of testing kits. All of these individuals are suspected to be positive and are being monitored via telephone contact, although they are not officially confirmed cases, highlighting the spread of the virus and reinforcing the need to respect the lockdown.
Thanks to the rapid and strict confinement of members of the public to their homes throughout the country it is hoped that the spread of the virus can be contained, although as stated many times before, the regional health authority is under no illusions that many cases have yet to show symptoms and it will probably be 2 to 3 weeks before we see a peak in case numbers in Murcia.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.
What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
A special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) has been created to prevent the public going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
