Storm Gloria brings record waves to the coastline of Cartagena
With rain and snow still falling as Storm Gloria continues to affect the Region of Murcia it was reported at lunchtime on Monday that the depth of the snow had reached 50 centimetres at the peak of Sierra Espuña and 40 cm in the villages of Campo de San Juan and Inazares, both in the municipality of Moratalla.
Other notable snowfalls were those of 20 cm in Bullas, 15 cm in Los Royos and 10 cm in Benizar and at La Carrasca in Totana.
Meanwhile, the heaviest rain 53 millimetres had fallen in Mazarrón, followed by La Manga (52.6 mm), Cartagena/Tentegorra (45.6 mm), Cartagena (38.4 mm), San Javier 34.1 mm), Caravaca de la Cruz (32.8 mm), Yecla (25.6 mm) and Alhama de Murcia (26.8 mm).
One of the most illustrative examples of the severity of the storm, though, is the occurrence of a wave measuring 5.86 metres at the monitoring buoy at the port of Cabo de Palos, the highest ever recorded at this location. Earlier on Monday the height of waves along the Valencia coastline reached 8 metres, another new record, while off the coast of Ibiza similar measurements reached an astonishing 14 metres!
These conditions have led to numerous cases of damage along the shore, and in Cabo de Palos out at sea as well. Four enclosures belonging to fish farms were torn from their moorings out at sea and washed towards the coast, although two were soon secured again, and in La Manga the Gola del Estacio, the main canal connecting the Mar Menor with the Mediterranean, was closed to traffic due to the rain causing electrical cabling to rise to the surface, accorfing to the regional Spanish media.
