Remember; Old Lives Matter too!
During the last 24 hours the regional health authority of the Murcia Region has reported the diagnosis of 794 new cases of coronavirus, the positives identified using PCR testing and antigen testing.
This brings the total number of cases diagnosed to date to 36,601, of which 10,655 are active cases.
Cases top, hospitalisations below
The 794 new cases are spread around the region, with only Ojós and Aledo free of active cases.
In the last 24 hours Murcia City has reported 233 new cases, giving it an accumulated incidence rate of 435 per 100,000 population during the last 7 days, a very high figure considering the size of its population. Molina de Segura is next with 50 cases, a municipality that acts as a “dormitory” town for Murcia city and also has a high resident population which has an IA rate of 438 /100,000 (50),San Javier (46) which is also showing increasing numbers of cases and an IA rate of 418, and allocated the remainder as follows; 42 to Cartagena, 39 to Caravaca de la Cruz, 36 to Alcantarilla, 30 to Alhama de Murcia, 29 to Cieza, 25 to Torre Pacheco, 20 to Archena, 19 to Las Torres de Cotillas, 17 to Abanilla, 17 to Jumilla, 13 to Los Alcázares, 13 to Ceutí, 13 to San Pedro del Pinatar, 12 to Moratalla, 11 to Bullas, 11 to Lorca, 11 to Yecla, 10 to Cehegín, 10 to Fuente Álamo, 9 to Librilla, 7 to Alguazas , 7 to Lorquí, 6 to Beniel, 5 to Abarán, 5 to Mula, 5 to Santomera, 5 to La Unión, and 5 to Villanueva del Río Segura, the remainder scattered around the region in smaller quantities.
Fatalities:
There have been 6 fatalities amongst patients diagnosed with coronavirus; four males and 2 females, aged 70,78, 82, 85, 86 and 87, from the municipalities of Murcia, Cartagena, Fortuna, Los Alcázares, Santomera and Mula. Their deaths bring the regional total up to 315 and the weekly total to 34.
Hospitalisations:
Four further patients have been admitted, bringing the total of covid patients to 514, with 89 in intensive care. From the active cases, this leaves 10,141 in home isolation.
Recoveries:
The total number of patients originally diagnosed as positive by PCR and now given the all-clear has risen to 23,925, 612 of them within the last 24 hours.
IA Rate
The accumulated incidence rate for the region over the last 7 day period has now risen to 376 cases per 100,000 of population, way above the target rate of 25 cases per 100,000 established by the Spanish Government and WHO as being a “controlled level”.
Currently the Murcia Region has uncontrolled transmission of the virus.
The municipality with the worst rate is Campos del Río, which has a rate of 2810, followed by Moratalla with 803, Abanilla 783, Villanueva 721, Ceuti 687,Albudeite 655, Archena 606, Caravaca 597, Lorqui 560, Alhama 557, Beniel 547, Torre Pacheco 546.
The new mobility restrictions have come into force from today, the regional health authority hoping that this will help to bring the spread of the virus under control and there will be a significant police presence on the roads this weekend, so if it’s not necessary to go out, then don´t.
The regional president today said that the region has sufficient medical resources to cope with a significant and sudden rise in case numbers although it is hoped that this will not be necessary.
An attempt has been made to answer all of the tidal wave of personal messages sent requesting further information in person, but all of the answers should be clear by reading this document; Basic questions about Murcia border closure and closure of municipal borders.
We are fully aware that many readers are anxious about the current levels of the virus, but can only re-enforce the message constantly sent out by the regional health authority to take adequate personal precautions, maintain social distancing and wear a mask in public. Limiting social contacts remains the most effective way of minimising the chance of contagion.

Daily reporting of information in English.
Murcia Today publishes daily updates of all aspects of the coronavirus. All of the statistics published are from official sources and accurately represent the current coronavirus situation in both the Murcia Region and Spain, without embellishment. As readers will be aware, this pandemic is worldwide and is creating considerable inconvenience for billions of people, with restrictions in place right across Europe, millions of people confined, thousands hospitalised and more than 1.1 million dead.
We are aware that there are people who still deny the existence of the virus and of course they are entitled to post on their own social media and call the credibility of information into question, but we are totally satisfied that these figures accurately represent the current situation. There is also considerable mis-information on social media. Due to the level of abuse and threats against journalists from those who wish to prevent the publication of these accurate figures and attack the credibility of this publication, posting in some groups has been discontinued. Our posts can all be found on the Murcia Today Facebook page.
