ARCHIVED - 90 percent of Costa Calida hotels will be forced to close this winter
The combination of a disastrous year due to the covid lockdown, ongoing travel restrictions and now the cancellation of the Imserso programme means the winter will be unviable for many coastal hotels
Yesterday August hotel occupancy figures clearly demonstrated what a difficult summer it’s been for the hotel and hostelry sector, with occupancy in the region down 49% on the same month last year.
The combination of nearly three months of covid lockdown, followed by a summer of uncertainty, quarantines and travel restrictions have already made the prospect of breaking even this year a distant dream. But the decision this week to cancel the Imserso holiday travel scheme for this autumn/winter means that even coachloads of pensioners on bargain breaks will not be filling half-empty hotels during the off-season months this year.
As a result, the Hostetur Asociación de Empresarios de Hoteles y Alojamientos de la Costa Cálida, says that “only three or four” Costa Cálida hotels will remain open this winter and the rest will close, “because of their structure and their installations, three or four hotels will be able to resist the crisis and will remain open. But the rest will close. Without clients it’s impossible to keep them going, “ said Soledad Díaz, president of Hostetur.
She described August as “horrible”, with frequent cancellations, particularly, for example, when an outbreak in Mazarrón at the end of July prompted a wave of cancellations for August, and said that the general public were very “indecisive”, waiting for news until the last minute before making a booking, and only booking for short periods in case of the need to suddenly quarantine.
It’s been a very strange summer she said, “we are used to having to compete on price, compete on quality or on the location of our establishments, but we’ve never had to compete against fear before.”
