ARCHIVED - A grey day fails to dampen spirits at the Mar Menor Remote Sailing Club
After a coffee and fine tuning racing and the weather improved!
It was nice to get back to Spain and sailing after a busy time moving home in the UK, arriving at the sailing centre the weather was a bit disappointing grey and overcast contrasting sharply with the previous days sunshine however it stayed dry and though coats were needed conditions were good for sailing.
An excellent course was laid out by Richard and Terry which gave some good choices as regards sailing to the first mark, most boats arriving at a similar time and a fair bit of Port/Starbord action, similarly the return from the downwind mark required some thinking go high and make the first mark in one go, or tack sooner and arrive at the first mark on port?
After practise, racing commenced with most skippers electing to make a long starboard run before tacking onto port for the run to the 1st marker, so some port starboard crossing with moments of drama but thankfully few incidents ensued.
Race 1 saw Dave off to a brilliant start establishing a good lead sailing a clean course and a well deserved win, unfortunately niggles with his rig tune meant he was not able to repeat this.
My first race in Spain this year was a bit disappointing a small mistake at the last mark putting me down to 5th place, Juanjo established a lead in the first 3 races with two firsts and a second place establishing a clear lead.
After a break for coffee and boat tuning I managed to get into the action with two first places, so as often happens the overall result was dependent on the last race of the Day, Juanjo was called back after crossing the line early leaving Richard and myself to establish a gap from the rest of the fleet, it was close racing with both boats rounding the last mark with myself just in front.
After tacking for the line I had positioned myself badly running a metre too deep and it looked like Richard would cross the line first but in a final twist we both got entangled with the remainder of the fleet crossing the line in the opposite direction, when we were both going again I managed to cross the line first by the very narrowest of margins!
After putting the scores through the sailwave the final totals were Juanjo and myself on equal points ,13 total and 8 nett with the overall result decided by the highest placed skipper in the last race.
The Final result was Stuart 1, Juanjo 2 and Richard 3, all in all a super days racing were the final result could have gone to either skipper.
Juanjo has had the boat cover repaired and strengthened it’s a very good job and means we should get a few more season use from it, Terry has arranged to wash our course markers and store them in the garage between races, a good idea which will extend their life and also makes the rib a bit easier to move.
This weekend is the Trofeo Barco de Sal at Torrevieja and the club has 5 skippers competing and we wish them good fortune, finally the Club prizegiving lunch this year will be held at the restaurant Caracoles on Wed 19th Feb after sailing at 2.00 pm.
