A new tourist attraction in Almería: Viewing point near the Alcazaba to open before December
The transformation of the Cerro de San Cristóbal promises stunning views and improved accessibility
Almería capital city is preparing to unveil its latest landmark: a spectacular viewing point on the Cerro de San Cristóbal, near the iconic Alcazaba. After two years of extensive work, the project is nearing completion and is set to open to the public before the end of November.
Referred to as the “balcony overlooking the city”, this new attraction offers panoramic views of Almería, blending history with modern urban design. The project, led by local construction company Jarquil and backed by a €3 million investment from the city council, aims to revitalise the area around the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús monument, making it more accessible and visually striking.
Transforming the Cerro de San Cristóbal
The redevelopment spans 2.5 hectares and includes:
- Pedestrian-friendly paths: Newly walkable routes and landscaped paths integrated into the historic site.
- Viewpoints and green spaces: Scenic platforms surrounded by groves of over 70 trees and shrubbery.
- Accessibility improvements: Parking areas for visitors, including spaces for individuals with reduced mobility.
- Innovative lighting: Over 400 light points illuminate the site, enhancing its visibility across the city while highlighting its architectural features.
Jesús Serrano, Jarquil's delegate for Civil Affairs, highlighted the transformative nature of the project: “The result is truly spectacular. This balcony to admire the city will soon be open to the public, offering an unparalleled space for citizens and tourists alike.”
As the final touches are being added, the Cerro de San Cristóbal will feature paved areas, railings and lush landscaping. The new lighting system, designed to enhance the site’s beauty, promises to make it a striking feature of the Almería skyline.
The project, which began way back on December 1, 2022, is part of a broader effort to regenerate urban spaces and increase the city’s appeal as a cultural and historical destination.
With the viewing point set to open in time for the holiday season, residents and visitors will soon have a remarkable new space to enjoy breathtaking views and connect with Almería’s rich heritage.
