ARCHIVED - Aemet warns that heavy rains are on the way for mainland Spain and the offshore islands
The state meteorological agency warns of an impending “important change in weather conditions”
Aemet is warning of an impending “important change in weather conditions, which will determine the end of the period of stability which we have enjoyed for the last few weeks, starting from Wednesday the 25th November.
The state meteorological agency warns that on the 25th a cold front will enter the west of the Spanish mainland and will mainly bring sustained rainfall on the Atlantic coastline. At the same time, a storm will also form just to the west of the Peninsula, bringing instability that will also deepen and extend to the Mediterranean coast and to both the Canary and Balearic archipelagos on successive days.
Rainfall is expected to be heavy on Wednesday and Thursday in south-westerly points of the peninsular in the southwest quadrant, especially in the areas of Extremadura and of western Andalusia, and on Friday and Saturday will spread into the Mediterranean area along the coastlines of Andalusia, Murcia and the Valencia region.
Cantabria, which lies within this quadrant, is likely to see less rain, due to the predominance of
southerly component winds.
These southern component winds will intensify on Thursday, to giving strong winds in higher areas, however, they will help to keep the temperature slightly higher than average for this time of year, ensuring that only the highest mountain ranges of the interior of the country will receive snowfall instead of rain.
Based on the current models, Aemet expects the storm, to remain quite stationary or at least
evolving very slowly, so the episode of high instability will be prolonged for most of the week, affecting most mainland regions as well as the offshore archipelagos to varying degrees.
Due to the uncertainty of the evolution of this storm and the long period of instability, it is
It is difficult to specify in detail how each of the autonomous regions is likely to be affected, so keep an eye on weather bulletins in the next few days and be aware that after a dry autumn, heavy rain could be on the way.
