ARCHIVED - 2 millionth visitor welcomed at the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena
Plans are being drawn up for more excavation at the most visited museum in the Region of Murcia
A gentleman from Miranda del Ebro, in the province of Burgos in northern Spain, received a surprise while visiting the Roman Theatre Museum in Cartagena on Wednesday when he found himself being greeted by Fernando López Miras, the president of the regional government in Murcia, Noelia Arroyo, the Deputy Mayoress of Cartagena, and the director of the museum, Elena Ruiz.
The reason for his being treated in this way was that he had unwittingly become visitor number two million to the most visited museum in the Region of Murcia, an event which coincided with the dignitaries attending the most recent meeting of the Roman Theatre Foundation. The total of 2,000,000 has been reached in only just over ten years since it opened, and this year alone the museum had welcomed 233,000 people by the end of November, 6.1 per cent more than in the same period in 2018.
According to Sra Ruiz, despite the number of school trips to the Roman Theatre 52 per cent of the visitors this year have been non-Spaniards, most of them from the UK although the numbers from France and Germany have also grown. The director also added that the year-end total is expected to show a similar increase after the museum proved especially popular over the long holiday weekend of 6th to 9th December.
Looking further ahead, it is estimated that the first phase of the excavation of the portico in the Roman Theatre, which is to be financed by the regional government, will require a budget of between 300,000 and 400,000 euros, and the Foundation has decided to draw up the necessary project. No definite timescale has been established for the excavation.
At the same time, the shirt promotion agreement with Fútbol Club Cartagena has been prolonged for another year.
