ARCHIVED - Seven times over the alcohol limit at the wheel of a 40-ton HGV in Cartagena
A Ukrainian driver faces charges after being breathalysed in the port of Escombreras
A Ukrainian lorry driver has been arrested by the Guardia Civil after being found to have consumer seven times the legal limit of alcohol before taking the wheel of his 40-ton vehicle, having been seen driving erratically in the container port of Escombreras in Cartagena.
The 47-year-old driver was on his way to pick up a cargo of timber from the docks and transport it to Germany when his suspicious behaviour was reported by staff at the Port Authority, and breathalyser tests showed that there was 1.07 milligrams of alcohol in each litre of air he expired. The legal limit for professional drivers is just 0.15 milligrams, and as a result the He could be barred from driving for up to 4 years.
(Click here for details regarding the alcohol limit for drivers in Spain, and what they mean in terms of how many drinks are needed for the limit to be exceeded).
The case in Lorca is the fifth of its kind in the Region of Murcia in 2019, following the detentions of drivers in January on the N-344 in Jumilla, in February on the N-340 in Alhama de Murcia and again in February after the lorry concerned overturned alongside the RM F-25 in San Pedro del Pinatar, shedding its load of mandarins in a roadside ditch.
