ARCHIVED - Shipping companies propose Cartagena-France ferry
The route would bypass possible motorway blockages in Catalunya for HGVs and cars
In the light of the recent disruption caused by Catalan separatist demonstrators on the motorway which runs along the Mediterranean coast to France, an interesting proposal has been made by three shipping companies to create a route from the port of Cartagena to the south of France, providing an alternative for HGVs to complete the first leg of their journeys delivering produce from Murcia to importers in northern Europe.
The FROET transport federation in Murcia is taking part on Wednesday in an event where the companies Grimaldi, Balearia and Suardíaz are outlining their proposal, which if it goes ahead would allow drivers a day’s rest and remove the possibility of delays like those which have become frequent over the last month or so in Catalunya. At the same time, the ferry would also cater for cars and holidaymakers anxious to avoid the long journey along the AP-7 motorway.
Every year 3 million tons of fruit and vegetables are exported from the Region of Murcia, the main means of transport being a fleet of over 10,000 articulate lorries, and the shipping companies believe that a “maritime motorway” could be an attractive option for those in the transport sector.
