ARCHIVED - Virgen de la Caridad returns to Cartagena following restoration
The Covid outbreak forced the cancellation of the Día de la Patrona this year and prolonged the restoration, so the image was not in her Basilica for the first time on this date in 297 years!
The 297 year old image of the Virgin de la Caridad, the patron of Cartagena City has returned to her permanent home in the church of La Caridad after spending the last eleven months in the Restoration Center of the Region of Murcia undergoing a facelift courtesy of the regional Government.

Her stay should have been shorter but the Covid outbreak intervened, the result being that the patron saint of Cartagena was not in her basilica on Viernes de Dolores for the first time in nearly 300 years and the city was unable to celebrate the traditional Día de la Patrona in which floral tributes are laid at her feet following a long costumed procession and the pasos of the Vía Crucis of the first acts of Semana Santa stop at the door of the church, turning towards the altar and dip to acknowledge the patrona.
The restoration of the image of the Patron Saint of Cartagena was complex, the carving first subjected to a complete study to determine its state of conservation, during which it was found that the image was in a poor condition, aggravated by an old and aggressive attack of xylophagous insects that had damaged not only the interior of the sculpture, but also its exterior, leaving many holes on the exterior and undermining the support structure internally.
The current restoration has focused on cleaning off generalized dirt, chromatically retouching where necessary, removing the tears from the Virgin's face, cleaning them and then reapplying to the face as well as structurally supporting the new restoration.
The formal return of the patron to her basilica took place in the Chapel of San José, a temporary location due to refurbishment work underway in the Basilica, attended by the the President of the Regional Government, Fernando López Miras and the Mayoress of Cartagena, Ana Belén Castejón.
