ARCHIVED - Armed forces supply food and blankets to 57 migrants stranded on tiny island
Pregnant women among those awaiting rescue from the Chafarinas islands near the Morocco coast
Spain’s armed forces have been called into action to help 57 would-be migrants into this country from Africa after they were stranded on the three tiny islands known as the Chafarinas just 2 miles from the coast of Morocco.
The migrants were stranded in the Chafarinas on Monday by rough sea conditions and the choppy water made their rescue impossible from the small islets which belong to Spain 57 kilometres east of the enclave of Melilla. Among them are 44 women of whom at least two are pregnant - one heavily – and with awareness of their situation being raised by the activist Helena Maleno on social network sites the army supplied them with blankets and food in order to help them through the night.
The Chafarinas were claimed by Spain in 1848, before which they belonged to no nation, and are usually uninhabited apart from military personnel and biologists. But they are a common destination for migrants, especially women and children as they cannot be returned to Morocco by the Spanish government under the terms of a treaty signed in 1992.
