Beaches of La Colonia and Poniente closed to swimmers this weekend
Overflow problems caused by broken pipes put an end to weekend swimming in Águilas
Águilas’s Councillor for Water, José Luis Moreno, appeared before the media this morning to report that bathing has been banned on the beaches of La Colonia and Poniente until Monday.
He stated, “We have two pumping units at the Matadero Station that are fed by the two pumps with the largest capacity. The duplicate pipes have broken simultaneously.”
The smallest pumping unit was therefore unable to absorb the entirety of the flow, causing small overflows. As a precaution and in view of the uncertainty of the quantity that may have reached the sea through the Rambla, it has been decided to ban swimming on the beaches of La Colonia and Poniente.
The municipal service and volunteers from Civil Protection, have placed signs, and the red flag has been raised on both beaches to stop people from swimming. La Colonia lifeguards will be present over the weekend to inform vistors about the ban.
