British appetite for Murcia produce soars 18.8% as Brexit becomes a thing of the past
UK shoppers are buying more fruit and veg from the Region of Murcia than ever before

Food producers in the Region of Murcia are selling more to British shoppers than ever before, with the latest figures suggesting the Brexit headaches are now well and truly behind them.
According to official export statistics from the Spanish Institute for Foreign Trade (ICEX), highlighted by the Region's Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, companies in the Region sent €566 million worth of agri-food products to the UK in the first seven months of 2026.
That's 18.8% more than the same period last year and a historic record, adding around €90 million to the total and making Britain the biggest single driver of the Region's export growth.
The leap is all the more striking because sales had been stuck between €435 million and €480 million for around ten years. After Brexit, exporters had to cope with extra paperwork on fruit, vegetables and other fresh produce, including the Single Administrative Document and a certificate of conformity with marketing standards, both introduced in 2021, and costs climbed as a result. Local firms adapted to the new procedures and worked hard to win shelf space with the big British supermarket chains, while London has put back a planned phytosanitary certificate requirement until January 2027, which has helped to keep things running smoothly.
Regional agriculture minister Joaquín Buendía described the British result as "excellent news" and pointed out that it shows trade ties and confidence in the quality of Murcian products remain strong across the English Channel.
With a population of 68 million, the UK is still one of Europe's most important markets, and in 2025 a total of 1,165 companies from the Region did business there. Fresh and frozen vegetables, fresh and frozen fruit, juices and food additives are among the main products heading north.
Germany and France remain the Region's biggest customers, with €939 million and €692.7 million respectively, and both are also on course for record years. Norway and Poland are growing quickly too, up 54% and 19%, while overall agri-food exports reached an all-time high of €4.809 billion between January and July, which is 63.6% more than a decade ago.
Mr Buendía put the success down to the resilience and excellence of local farmers and producers rather than luck.
