British passenger dies after choking on cruise ship near Cádiz

The ship made an emergency docking in Andalucía so the 89-year-old could be rushed to hospital

An 83-year-old British man, Kenneth Edward Cooper, has died after choking on food while dining aboard a cruise ship off the coast of Cádiz. The incident happened on April 10 while the luxury liner was sailing just a few miles from the port, but the sad news has only just been made public.

Mr Cooper, a retired pensioner from Bournemouth, was attended to by onboard medical staff before the ship made an emergency stop to seek further help. He was transferred to a hospital in Cádiz, where he sadly passed away the following day.

Few details about the case have been made public. The name of the cruise ship has not been released. An investigation into the circumstances has been opened.

The elderly man’s body was later returned to Bournemouth and a post-mortem was carried out on May 6. It confirmed that Mr Cooper died from a hypoxic brain injury caused by asphyxiation.
