ARCHIVED - British passengers make in-flight conflictive situations more common at Alicante airport than any other in Spain
88 per cent of incidents on Alicante flights involved British nationals
Rightly or wrongly, British tourists in Spain are often associated with drunkenness and hooliganism, and figures published this week by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) unfortunately confirm that to some extent this reputation is justified.
The data concern reports of conflictive incidents on board flights to and from Spain and show that the number of such cases has risen sharply from 441 in 2016 to 867 so far in 2019, and that UK nationals holidaying in the Spanish Costas are largely responsible. The airport where most cases have been registered is Alicante-Elche with 185 – almost 20 per cent of the national total despite the Costa Blanca airport carrying 5.5 per cent of all passengers using Spanish airports – and most of the incidents have occurred during the Easter and summer holiday periods.
IATA also reports that 23 per cent of conflictive incidents involve the consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol and the proportion is higher at Alicante-Elche, but the most striking aspect is that a very large number of them – 163 out of 185 – involve British passengers. Across the country the proportion is lower at 311 out of 867, with the Brits followed by the Spanish (153) and the Germans (103), but the obvious conclusion is that for some reason the UK nationals travelling to and from the Costa Blanca are particularly problematic!
