ARCHIVED - Burger King launches vegetarian only restaurant in Madrid
The whimsical restaurant will be set up like a theme park for a limited time only in the capital of Spain
These days, it’s very common place to see extensive vegetarian and vegan options on menus, not only in formal restaurants but also in fast-food joints. But home-of-the-Whopper Burger King has taken things a step further and will open it’s very first 100% veggie venue in Madrid.
Coinciding with the launch of the all-new Long Vegetal sandwich throughout Spain and Portugal, the burger giant will convert its premises at Paseo del Prado No 26 in the capital into a space where only non-meat products are on offer. Burger King has claimed that the venture, which will run for a month, will be set-up like a “theme park” for vegetarians.
To give it that carnival feel, the restaurant will be decked out in a vertical garden hanging from the ceiling and a picnic area complete with artificial grass and sky blue lights.
In addition to the Long Vegetal (the vegetarian version of the Long Chicken), consisting of bread, mayonnaise, lettuce and a soy and wheat-based chicken substitute manufactured by The Vegetarian Butcher, the store will offer other products such as Vegetable Nuggets and a Vegetable Whopper.
The all-veggie restaurant may be unique to Burger King, but the other major fast-food players aren’t far behind, with McDonalds launching a McPlant burger at the end of 2020, which is currently being trialled in Denmark and Sweden. While Spanish customers may have to wait for these options for a while longer, foodies in the UK and Ireland are already chowing down on a vegan version made with pea protein, containing lettuce, tomato, pickles, ketchup, mustard and vegan cheese.
