article_detailDate Published: 03/06/2020ARCHIVED ARTICLEARCHIVED - Cartagena resumes lifeguard services from 8th June
Services on the Mediterranean coast are to be re-inforced in anticipation of increased demand
As part of a generalised plan to make the “return to normality” more visible and to signal that the municipality is open for tourism business once again, the 26 beaches on which bathing is allowed in the Cartagena municipality will have lifeguards working from June 8th onwards. From Monday, June 1st and until the 8th a temporary vigilance service will reportedly be offered by Protección Civíl volunteers, although reports in the regional Spanish language media indicate that this was a little slow in starting in the early part of the week!.The first beaches hoping to open with this vigilance service on 1st June are the beaches of Galúa, in La Manga, and San Ginés, in La Azohía.This year Cartagena council is spending 2.1 million euros in total on beach vigilance, the largest amount spent for several years. The major part of this is paying lifeguard salaries via a private company contracted to supply trained staff and although the town hall was criticised for continuing with the adjudication phase of the contract during lockdown without having a clear idea whether bathing would be permitted or not this summer, the council is now rather smug about being the first in the region to have contracted and guaranteed its lifeguard cover when other municipalities have no contracts in place, but as the summer is likely to be “complicated” for tourism given the dual factors of the problems in the Mar Menor and Covid-19, being able to guarantee security and safety for bathers is deemed to be top priority. This year the problems in the Mar Menor are likely to drive increased numbers of bathers onto the Mediterranean coastal beaches of the region and Cartagena is fortunate to have both beaches within the Mar Menor circle and many other coastal beaches on la Manga del Mar Menor and all along its wild coastline from Cabo de Palos along the coast to la Azohía and Isla Plana including the stunning Calblanque regional park which has some stunning wild coves. This year additional resources will offer protection in Isla Plana and La Azohía in anticipation of increased demand and the regional government has confirmed that a bus service will run for Calblanque beaches this year again, starting in July once the state of emergency has concluded. The Murcia beach guide has a comprehensive guide to all of the beaches in the Murcia Region, with photographs and maps of each.
