The Town Hall of Jumilla has launched a “Zero Cacas + Zero Pipís” campaign in an attempt to make residents more aware of the nuisance and threat to public health by the excrement and urine of their pets, particularly dogs.
Dog owners are able to collect a re-usable flask from the Town Hall to be filled with a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar in order for it to be poured on urine in the streets, thus neutralising the smell: anyone doing so is required to show the vet’s card of the pet.
At the same time radio ads have been taken out and further publicity contracted in newspapers, local TV and digital media, while councillor Juan Gil explains that with over 6,000 pets registered in the municipality the importance of collecting excrement and the problem of dog urine should not be underestimated. After all, as has been made clear as a result of one of the projects suggested by the locals and adopted by the Town Halls, “Dogs do not wee perfume”!
In addition, reminders are being offered that the failure to collect dog mess can result in a fine of between 60 and 300 euros, although the aim of the campaign is not to raise revenue through fines but to raise awareness of a civic duty. At the same time, a special product called Repelcan is to be sprayed in the streets of the town: this substance claims to eliminate dogs’ desire to urinate in locations where it has been applied.
