ARCHIVED - Coronavirus lockdown fines in Lorca will be used to buy facemasks for medical staff
175 fines were imposed by the Policía Local in Lorca in the first 10 days of lockdown
Diego José Mateos, the Mayor of Lorca, announced on Tuesday that all money generated by fines on people breaking the coronavirus lockdown restrictions will be used to acquire equipment such as facemasks, protective gloves and other material required by healthcare workers.
The decision has been made, according to the Mayor, in order to enable the health service to bear up as well as possible to the demands being made of it, underlining that any suggestions to the effect that the emergency is being used to generate Town Hall funding could not be further from the truth. Last week a first donation of 5,000 facemasks was made to the management of Health Area III of the Region of Murcia, and all over the huge municipality other gestures of support are being made.
During the first ten days of lockdown, councillor José Luis Ruiz Guillén reports that the local police force has identified a total of 2,375 in connection with lockdown infringements and 2,911 motor vehicles have been checked at the roadside. 175 people have been fined but no arrests have been made, and Sr Ruiz states that while 98 per cent of the population are abiding by the rules of the state of emergency efforts to clamp down on the few offenders will continue unabated.

The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
