Dog-friendly beaches in Mazarrón
Playa Cobaticas, Playa Sierra de Las Moreras, and Playa Gachero dog friendly beaches in Mazarrón
The Town Hall of Mazarrón has produced a guide to the three beaches in the municipality which have been designated as dog-friendly areas, where owners can let their pets off the lead and allow them to roam on the sand and in the sea.
Of course, dog owners also need to be aware of the dangers of taking their pet to the beach in Spain. Hot weather can be dangerous for many dogs, so try to visit when the temperatures drop, or keep visits short. On the hottest days, it’s best to go for a different activity that’s safer for your dog.
The three dog-friendly beaches are located at different points along the 35 kilometres of coastline in the municipality, and have been chosen because they generally receive few visitors: in this way any possible inconvenience to other bathers is minimized.
The westernmost of the three is the beautiful Playa de las Cobaticas, which is between Bolnuevo and Percheles close to the beaches of Lorca. This is a stony and gravelly beach which measures a kilometre in length, and although access is not easy it is worth a visit to admire the beautiful landscape. It also gives dog owners plenty of space in which to allow their dogs to run free.
Also towards the western end of the municipality is the Playa Sierra de Las Moreras, a 500-metre stretch of sand next to the Rambla, and by the entrance roundabout to Bolnuevo, and on the other side of Puerto de Mazarrón is the more urban Playa Gachero, which is between the beaches of El Alamillo and Rihuete.
The move by the Town Hall is a popular one among dog owners who have been requesting permission to use the beaches of Mazarrón with their pets for many years, and is also likely to attract visitors from other areas who want to spend a day at the beach with their faithful canine friends.
There are, of course, some rules governing the use of Mazarrón’s dog-friendly beaches:
Potentially dangerous animals must be muzzled, owners must pick up excrement and deposit it in the bins provided, and all of the dog’s paperwork must be in order and up-to-date. At the same time care must be taken not to disturb or annoy other beach users, and failure to abide by these common-sense rules can result in fines of between 750 and 3,000 euros.

- Playa Gachero (this is at the far end of El Alamillo beach heading towards the Puerto de Mazarrón. It’s not discernable as a distinct beach as it is essentially, just the stretch of pebbled coastline running around the headway from one beach to another. Click Playa Gachero
