ARCHIVED - Five charged with setting illegal animal traps in the mountains of central and northern Murcia
A dog died after swallowing poisoned bait in the municipality of Fortuna
Five people have been placed under investigation by the Seprona wildlife protection unit of the Guardia Civil and the Department of the Environment in the regional government of Murcia after it was found that poisoned bait was being used in animal traps in the regional park of Sierra de la Pila.
The park falls into the municipalities of Molina de Segura, Abarán, Blanca, Fortuna and Jumilla in the centre and north of the Region of Murcia although it was at properties in Fortuna, Mula and Campos del Río that a selection of items including poison, forearms, gunpowder, bullets, bows, arrows and various kinds of trap were confiscated.
Investigations into the possible use of outlawed traps in the mountains began last year after poisoned bait was found in a trap in the municipality of Fortuna, and while sniffer dogs were brought transferred from Madrid to join in the search for more another dog was found dead after having been poisoned in the same area. The cause of death was confirmed by an autopsy carried out by staff at the University of Murcia and the wildlife recovery centre in El Valle, in the mountains just south of the city of Murcia, where it was found that the substance used as bait was aldicarb, which is banned in the EU as it can cause harm not only to animals but also to human beings.
Suspicions eventually alighted on a man living in Campos del Río and this led to the three properties being searched and to aldicarb being found in a motor vehicle at one of them by one of the sniffer dogs brought in from Madrid. At the same time the owner did not have the necessary documentation for the legal ownership of various of the firearms.
Eventually five men aged between 37 and 77 were identified as being involved in the use of this illegal hunting material and their case is now in the hands of the courts of Cieza.
