ARCHIVED - Free turtle tours running in San Pedro del Pinatar on Tuesdays and Fridays this summer
San Pedro del Pinatar is offering visitors the chance to meet the loggerhead turtles that were born last year in La Manga del Mar Menor.
During the summer season, San Pedro del Pinatar will be running free guided tours to see the loggerhead turtles born last year in La Manga del Mar Menor and understand more about the conservation programme running in the region.
Tours will run on Tuesdays and Fridays, from 11.30 am to 1 pm and are free of charge.
The turtles have been at the IMIDA centre in San Pedro del Pinatar, which is currently home to 41 of 47 baby turtles which hatched in La Manga del Mar Menor last summer, as part of the Head-Starting technique designed to increase their chances of survival.
Only one in 1,000 hatchlings will reach adulthood and the project aims to give them a head start in life by rearing the turtles in captivity until they weigh around one kilo, at about one year, to improve their chances.
Over the next few weeks, now that the turtles are strong enough, they will begin to swim in the Mediterranean Sea after being released from the same beach where they were born - in the hopes that they will choose the same location to lay their own eggs in the future.
The free guided tour will be in Spanish and registrations must be made in advance by calling the Visitor Centre in Las Salinas on 968 178 139.
Be aware that the tour is in Spanish and numbers are strictly limited, so prior booking is essential.
Click for the Las Salinas visitor centre in San Pedro del Pinatar for more information and to book your place on the tour.
