ARCHIVED - Frontex border forces using carbon dioxide detectors in search for irregular migration
These devices can detect the presence of a hidden animal or human being in less than a second
This year the Frontex border force which works within the EU started using carbon dioxide detectors during vehicle checks in Spain as part of operation Minerva. The device measures the level of CO2 in the air and can alert the officer if a human or even an animal is hidden inside in less than a second, helping the officers to detect incidences of human and animal smuggling into and within the EU.
Currently Frontex officers are using almost to 30 carbon dioxide detectors at 20 border crossing points along the EU’s external borders to speed up migration checks and monitor border crossings.
