ARCHIVED - Frustration from Los Alcazares police over disgusting litter on the beaches
The couldn´t care less attitude of holidaymakers is offensive and frustrating
Some of us are happy to give up our own spare time to go down to the region’s beaches and clear up plastic waste to try and prevent the destruction of our precious marine environment and at this time of year it is difficult to maintain an air of civility when seeing holidaymakers literally chucking their rubbish on the beaches as though it just doesn´t matter.
Los Alcázares local police are obviously feeling the same degree of frustration and have taken to social media to express their indignation at the couldn´t care less attitude of some of those holidaying in the Mar Menor this year: “it looks as though we’re not all in the same boat….” they say.
“ It is very common to see images like these or even worse, seeing bottles and cans in the water, which after floating for a while, end up sinking, becoming not only a pollutant, but also a risk for bathers. The future of our Mar Menor is uncertain, but with this type of behaviour, much shorter. Remember to leave the place, if possible, better than how you found it.”
To which we must add of course, there’s no point crying about the poor whale or turtle which has died of starvation with a stomach full of plastic waste or a seagull dying for the same reason with its stomach filled with cigarette butts, if we continue to permit plastic waste like this to go into our oceans.
People are quick enough to complain if the beaches aren´t perfectly clean, yet they couldn´t care less about leaving their rubbish all over them.......
