ARCHIVED - Full-time schooling returns to infant and primary education in Murcia
Pupils will attend class five days a week for the last two months of the school year
Despite the rise in coronavirus infection rates in most of Spain since the start of the Easter holiday period the Region of Murcia has so far been relatively unaffected, and in consequence another step towards the resumption of “normality” has been announced by the regional ministry of Health and Education.
Since the current school year began in September a system has been in place whereby the number of pupils attending classes has been limited, with many groups split in half so that some are present while others take part in proceedings online. The two “shifts” have been taking turns on alternate days to be present at their schools, while in other centres many pupils have been attending school on only four days a week in order to make social distancing feasible in classrooms by reducing the number of people in each room.
The general consensus among teachers is that this has slowed down the progress of many classes, although of course public health has been the top priority over the last eight months.
Now, however, it has been decided that for the last seven or eight weeks of the school year in Murcia all students will return to class in infant and primary education, affecting children up to the age of 12 or 13: in infant education this is to happen on 29th April, and in primary education a week later on 6th May.
The decision has been made not only in the light of the relatively low risk of infection in Murcia, where the 14-day incidence rate remains at approximately 70 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, but also because the number of cases being reported among pupils and teachers remains very low: only around 1 per cent of all class groups are currently affected by Covid alerts.
At the same time, it will come as a great relief to parents who since September have been adapting and stretching their work timetables in order to take care of children on one day every week. Further guarantees are provided by the fact that the majority of teachers have now received at least the first of their two vaccine doses, and at the same time the rising spring temperatures make it possible to leave windows open and ensure adequate ventilation at all times in school buildings.
However, some teachers are less convinced, believing that class sizes will make social distancing impossible to maintain and that the optimum solution would be to reduce the number of pupils per group.
In the last year of non-compulsory secondary education (2º de Bachillerato) full attendance has already been re-introduced as students prepare for their EBAU university entrance exam in June.
