ARCHIVED - German Government plans to lift travel restrictions to Spain on September 30th
The general recommendation will be replaced by specific warnings for countries or regions
The travel sector in Spain is hoping that German tourists may once again be able to visit all, or part of, Spain from the end of September following an announcement that the German system of monitoring travelleres will change from the end of the month.
The German Government plans to lift the general recommendation against non-essential travel to risk areas, which includes Spain, on September 30th, and will replace it with specific warnings for countries or regions.
Government spokesperson, Martina Fiez, announced this modification, agreed on Wednesday by the Council of Ministers, and which affects a total of 160 countries, both in the European Union and outside the EU.
All of Spain, including the Balearic and Canary Islands is in the same risk zone classification as some regions of France -including Paris-, Belgium, Romania and Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Turkey, practically the entire Balkan region, the United States and Russia, as well as countries in Africa and Asia.
The recommendation formula against non-essential travel to these risk areas issued in July, replaced a previous warning against all types of travel and to any country in the world, prepared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in March, at the height of the pandemic .
In July the recommendation for the whole of the EU and the Schengen area was lifted, which made it possible to resume tourist visits to these destinations. However, in mid-August several European regions were once again included as risk areas -amongst them, several Spanish autonomous communities-, which was followed by the classification of the entire Spanish territory as being of risk.
Travellers from these countries were obliged to present a negative coronavirus test, carried out in the last 48 hours before entering the country, or undergo one when entering Germany or in the following 72 hours.
Until these negative results could be delivered, the traveller had to quarantine.
As of September 15th, all travellers will no longer be offered the option of taking this test for free when entering the country. Instead, they will be quarantined for the first five days and from then on they will undergo a test, which if negative will prevent further quarantining.
