ARCHIVED - Hopes of covid stabilisation grow in Murcia with large drop in new cases
Although Monday is generally a “low” day, this is the lowest figure for some weeks
Accumulated incidence rate showing the worst affected municipalities. Figures quoted are the rate per 100,000 of popualtion.
All of those desperate to get back out and about and return to their favourite bar for a spot of tapas and a coffee are hoping that the figures delivered this week by the regional health service will show that the rate of covid contagions is slowing down in the Murcia Region and that the measures imposed by the regional government are having some effect. There has certainly been a slowdown in the number of new cases being diagnosed on a daily basis across the last few days, although the number of deaths and hospitalisations have remained high as is only to be expected given the high level of new cases during the last month.
Figures published on Mondays are generally lower than any other day of the week as they relate to diagnoses made the day before and on Sunday less testing is undertaken due to personnel taking time off during the weekend.
This week however, the figures are markedly lower than they have been for some time, and the percentage of positive cases during the PCR testing programme is also a lot lower than a week ago; just 10.4%, the second lowest level for the last couple of weeks. Last week the figure was consistently around 15%, so this is also better news than the lower number of new cases as it shows that the virus is not as widespread amongst the population.
The number of PCR tests this Sunday was particularly low at only 2,325, yielding just 243 new cases.
82 of these were detected in Murcia City municipality, 35 in Yecla, an area with a rapid growth in new cases which now has the highest rate per 100,000 of population in the region, 18 in Cartagena, 17 in Lorca, 15 in Caravaca de la Cruz, 8 in Jumilla, 7 in Alcantarilla, 7 in Alhama de Murcia, 6 in Molina de Segura, and 6 in Totana, the remainder scattered around the region in lower quantities.
This graphic shows the number of PCR tests being undertaken daily at the top, the red line indicating the percentage of positives and the fatalities below.
Fatalities:
Nine further fatalities were reported on Monday, bringing the total to date to 497. The six men and three women were aged between 73 and 90, five of them from Murcia city, two from Cieza, one from Yecla and one from Molina de Segura.
This graphic shows the number of cases by day and the hospitalisations; blue is severe covid cases, red the numbers in intensive care.
Hospitalisations:
The number of hospitalised patients has remained fairly stable, with just two new patients taking the number of patients requiring hospital treatment up to 610, while the number in intensive care has risen to 106. The total of patients with minor or asymptomatic cases isolating at home has fallen to 11,069, leaving a total of 11,679 active cases across the region.
Recoveries:
For the second consecutive day the number of patients cured has exceeded the number of new cases, bringing down the number of active cases. 860 patients were given the all-clear on Sunday, taking the total of patients who have made a recovery up to 34,737.
Covid hotspots:
At the moment, Yecla is the worst-affected municipality with 967 cases per 100,000 of population, followed by Caravaca de la Cruz with 904.
Alhama de Murcia has edged into third place, the first time that the municipality has been anywhere near the top of this particular league table with 693, and Totana, which has been near the top or at the top for a large part of the “new normal” has edged back up into fourth place with 603. Jumilla (554), Cehegín (540) and Moratalla (535) confirm the increased cases in the north and north-west, followed by Fuente Álamo which was badly affected at one point, but appeared to get the virus under control, although is now climbing right back up the leader board again with 524. Most of the other names at the top of the list have been here several times before and have failed to completely clear their coronavirus contagions, but Los Alcázares is suddenly starting to surge and has moved up into 14th place; sadly as we know all too well, it only takes one outbreak to start pushing up the contagions in a municipality and some times it’s very difficult to shake them off altogether.
