ARCHIVED - Irrigation water channel in Alguazas reopened 5 months after the September gota fría
The water supply is restored to 460 hectares of farmland in central Murcia
Almost five months after the severe gota fría storm of September 2019, the heaviest to hit the Region of Murcia for 50 years, the Acequia Mayor de Alguazas irrigation water canal between Alguazas and Lorquí is now fully operational again after reconstruction work was funded to the tune of 48,000 euros by the regional government.
Major repairs were made necessary by floodwater damage to the left wall of the canal, but now that the infrastructure is up and running again it will resume supplying water to 1,000 farmers in an area of 460 hectares. The worst affected stretch of the “acequia” was on the boundary between the municipalities of Archena and Ceutí, where 75 metres of canal wall collapsed under the pressure of the almost unprecedented volume of water flowing into it last September.
