ARCHIVED - Jazz Cartagena returns to Murcia this November
The much-loved music festival was cancelled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic in the Region
Many cultural events were heavily affected by the coronavirus pandemic, with festivals and large gatherings drastically limited over the past year and a half. The vast majority of concerts were put on hold in the Region of Murcia, but the famed Cartagena Jazz Festival embraced the changes and looked set to run last year, albeit with severe restrictions. However, a sharp upturn in Covid cases forced its cancellation just hours before the inauguration, meaning that the 2021 festival is more anticipated than ever.
Thus, the municipality of Cartagena is set to celebrate the 40th edition of its jazz festival between November 4 and 21 and the event promises to be bigger and better than ever. Musical artists from all over the world will be featured, including national performers such as Andrea Motis, Marco Mezquida and Antonio Lizana, not to mention local Murcian talent.
The number of foreign jazz artists is a novel move, but the mayor of Cartagena insisted that, this year, the coastal town wants “to be brave and try taking risks,” by embracing something that has never been seen before.
The main difference during the 2021 festival will be that only one concert will take place in each room per day, and the timetable will try and play to the strengths of the hospitality industry, with several weekend shows facilitating late dinner and drinks by beginning around 8pm.
Keeping it local, the jazz festival will showcase three performances by musical groups who are originally from Cartagena but who have worked for many years outside Spain.
Full details of the line up, along with ticket purchasing options, can be found at the jazzcartagena.com website.
