ARCHIVED - Jumilla confined as covid cases continue to climb
This wine producing municipality is in the north-west of the Region of Murcia
The regional Government has taken the decision to confine the Jumilla municipality, following the same model as was applied last week in the Archivel district of Caravaca de la Cruz and previously in Totana.
The same restrictions will be applied as in the Totana confinement, and this form of confinement is now known as a “flexibilised confinement” which broadly follows the same rules as were applied in phase 1, so the capacity of bars and shops is limited to 50%, day centres for the elderly are closed, and visits to residencias are banned. Residents will be free to move around within the boundaries of the municipality but not to leave it other than for essential reasons, to go to work, go to the doctor etc.
No-one from outside the pedanía can enter, unless for essential reasons.
The residents are not confined to their homes, but it is highly recommended that over 65s do not leave their homes.
The decision has been taken following several days of high cases, all linked to the number of private parties which took place after the fiestas del vino had been cancelled and young people decided to hold their own fiestas at home instead.
Over the last 7 days 164 cases have been detected givig the municipality an accumulated incidence rate of 640 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and 261 cases in the last 14 days, which in turn gives an accumulated incidence rate of 1289 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, both figures the highest in the region.
The regional average is 173, so these figures are very high.
The majority of cases are concentrated into the main town, so the confinement is perceived as being the correct mechanism to contain the spread of the virus.
Archivel in Caravaca de la Cruz will remain in confinement for a further week.
In addition, school classes will not resume in a presencial form in these two municipalities until the situation improves, and school classes will be streamed online for pupils.
Other municipalities continue to concern the health authorities, principally Lorca, but the situation there is very different to that in Jumilla as the cases are widespread and generalised, rather than in specific clusters.
For the moment it is felt that little is to be gained by confining the municipality and tracers are continuing to work to try and identify and test the immedicate contacts of those who test positive.
The health authorities recognise that there is a widespread problem relating to workers within the agricultural sector and is working with the sector to find ways of dealing with the problem.
Totana is also causing concern, as cases have been rising there steadily once again since the municipality came out of confinement.
