ARCHIVED - Jumilla replaces palm trees killed by red palm weevil

Seven canary palms will be planted in time for the fiestas of Jumilla in August
Work has begun in Jumilla to replace the seven palm trees on the Paseo Lorenzo Guardiola which were removed after becoming infested with the destructed red palm weevil, an insect which has decimated the palm population of many Mediterranean coastal areas of Spain over the last decade.
While the old trees are being disposed of in a manner which guarantees that no insects or larvae remain, the new Canary palms, with trunks of between 2 and 2.5 metres, and will be in place well before the local fiestas which occupy much on the month of August.
