Various of the wine-producing and marketing concerns in Jumilla, where the Denomination of Origin label has grown considerably in prestige since it was created in 1961, have long been aware of the importance of the market in the Far East for exports, and with Donald Trump’s latest round of trading tariffs threatening alcoholic beverages from Europe this has become even more relevant.
In this context, the regulating body of D.O. Jumilla have organized an Asian tour over the last month in which representatives of 12 “bodegas” have visited the 2019 Vinexpo Shanghai and Hong Kong Wine and Spirits fairs, as well as promoting awareness of Jumilla wines in Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore, where Spanish wines are gaining a good foothold. These actions are strengthened by the already significant sales of Jumilla wine being made in China – only this week it was announced that a Chinese business group has acquired a 45 per cent share in David wines, which currently exports 350,000 bottles a year of Jumilla wine to the Far Eastern giant.
On account of initiatives such as Davidwines there is already a certain familiarity with Jumilla wine among the wine-drinking public in the region, and the delegation from Jumilla is also taking part in “Spanish Extravaganza Asia”, a three-date tour which visits Seoul, Taiwan and Singapore City this week.
