ARCHIVED - La Manga loggerhead turtle nest cleared following hatching of three final turtles
Three more turtles are the last to hatch from la Manga test
The nest has now been dug out and the infertile eggs removed
Technicians from the El Valle wildlife recover Centre have dug up the remaining eggs from the nest of 100 eggs laid on the playa Ensenada del Esparto (San Javier), at km.14 of La Manga del Mar Menor after 3 further hatchlings emerged from the eggs this week.
The eggs were laid on 23rd July and 90 were re-buried in a safer spot on the beach, the remaining 10 transferred to incubators in the recovery centre. Three of these incubated eggs hatched on the 11th, 12th and 13th September, but the remaining 7 eggs were found to be infertile.
40 of the eggs laid on the beach hatched on the night of Thursday 17th and early hours of Friday 18th, after 57 days of incubation, emerging onto the sand. On Friday 18th and Saturday 19th three more baby turtles hatched.
All were taken to the IMIDA in San Pedro del Pinatar where they will be cared for until they reach a weight of 1 kilo and can be released (see report from last week for full information.)
By the early part of this week there was little chance of any further hatchlings emerging, so this week the nest has been opened and the remaining infertile eggs removed.
44 shells exactly matched the number of hatchlings which emerged, 45 eggs were infertile and 1 hatchling had partially emerged but had died without digging out of the nest. These hatchlings have been joined by the four hatchlings found in Calnegre from a second nest; all in all a very satisfactory summer for those working to conserve the population of loggerhead turtles with more than double the success rate of last year.
The 21 hatchlings from 2019 are currently undergoing an accustomisation programme in Valencia prior to being released.
