La Torre expats co-ordinate local community support
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The La Torre Community Support Volunteers are helping those who are in a more vulnerable position
We may all be in enforced lockdown, but that doesn´t stop volunteers from helping one another in the expat community out here in the Murcia Region of Spain.
One of the main benefits of living in an expat community out here is that there is always somebody willing to help out and certainly the residential urbanisations are not willing to be floored by the coronacrisis.
It's a difficult time for the expat community; many businesses will be badly affected by the enforced closure of their premises or by having to stop work altogether, some couples are currently divided by the lack of flights, other people are alone having lost a partner to illness, and as the majority of those living in the urbanisations are retirees or early retirees, the chances of them suffering more severe symptoms than younger people is higher, making the need to lock down and lock our doors from the world even more pressing.
On the la Torre Resort volunteers had already formed into a group of willing hands following the Gota Fría storms which have caused so many problems in the region during the last few months, and have risen to the cause once again, helping those who are left on their own, the infirm, or those who can´t drive, with a friendly service collecting shopping or prescriptions making sure that no-one is left on their own during this crisis in their own on-resort community.Volunteers will work in line with the Royal Decree, will act responsibly and follow social distancing protocols. No one will enter anyone's property.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
