ARCHIVED - Loggerhead sea turtle re-released after being rescued near Cabo Tiñoso
The turtle was found drifting with a raffia sack tangled around its neck
Another loggerhead sea turtle was re-released into the Mediterranean on Thursday after receiving treatment at the Wildlife Recovery Centre in El Valle, in the mountains just south of Murcia, bringing the total of successful recoveries so far this year up to five.
The latest specimen to benefit from the attention of the specialists in El Valle is a young turtle weighing 2.8 kilos and with a shell measuring 28 centimetres. It was rescued on 1st October by staff patrolling in the marine reserve of La Muela-Cabo Tiñoso who spotted it drifting with the remains of a raffia sack tangled around its neck.
Before being returned to the Mediterranean the loggerhead (Caretta caretta) was fitted with a metal ring on its right flipper and microchipped so that it can be identified if picked up again in the future.
A month ago the first baby loggerhead sea turtles known to have been born in the Region of Murcia for over a century hatched from eggs which had been laid in late July at Cala Arturo in the regional park of Calblanque, underlining the fact that despite the threat to the species posed by plastic pollution and discarded fishing equipment in the sea the population is growing along the Mediterranean coast of Spain.
One of the factors favouring their return to of loggerheads to Spain is the gradual rise in water temperatures, and in recent years eggs have been found on the coast of the Comunidad Valenciana, the province of Almería and the Balearic Islands. Once found the eggs are normally taken into protection for incubation and the young turtles are kept in captivity for around a year: in the wild, it is estimated that only one in a thousand loggerhead turtles survives to reach that age.
