ARCHIVED - Lorca embroidery loses out in bid for UNESCO World Heritage recognition
The gold and silk embroideries of Lorca are featured in the spectacular annual Semana Santa parades
The latest bid to include the traditional gold and silk embroidery of the city of Lorca in UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage has again ended in disappointment, following the news that Spain’s National Historical Heritage Council has decided instead to name manual bell-ringing as its candidate.
Lorca has been Spain’s official candidate for inclusion on the prestigious list since 2014, and with UNESCO not scheduled to decide on the next awards until next year the city will not have another chance to compete until 2024. However, planning for that candidacy has already begun and the “Asociación del Arte del Bordado en Lorca y su Puesta en Escena en los Desfiles Bíblico-Pasionales” has already convened to discuss new strategies in their on-going campaign for recognition from UNESCO, which began over a decade ago.
Eduardo Sánchez Abadíe, the president of the association, is reported as saying that while the candidacy presented was a good one, it seems that the criteria used by the member states of UNESCO appear to have changed in favour of more widespread traditions, such as the drumming during Semana Santa processions in various towns in the north of Murcia. In the light of this Sr Sánchez intends to ally the candidacy of Lorca with other regions, possibly as part of a cultural tourist route in Spain.
Meanwhile, Diego José Mateos, the Mayor of Lorca, suggests that the rejection of the city’s bid may be related to the recent recognition of the Running of the Wine Horses in Caravaca de la Cruz, and that the national council was reluctant to accept two consecutive candidates from the same region of Spain.
