Lorca tackles mosquito problem with novel natural remedy
Lorca plans to control these pests by creating more homes for insect-eating birds
While the rain and gale-force winds have been the protagonists in the Region of Murcia this week, the temperatures continue to rise and in the insect world, a combination of damp and heat creates a breeding frenzy. With summer fast approaching, pesky mosquitoes have already begun buzzing around our ears, but Lorca City Council is getting out in front of the problem.
The authorities have already started replacing nesting boxes that should attract insect-loving birds like swifts, and 25 habitats have been installed across Lorca this week.
“Thanks to these nest boxes for swifts, Lorca will be able to better combat the proliferation of mosquitoes this spring. These birds, which feed on insects and in enormous numbers, are natural predators of mosquitoes, so their presence in urban environments helps to naturally control these annoying pests.
"Numerous specific tasks and campaigns are carried out by the Department of Pest Control and, when spring arrives, it is important to pay special attention to these insects, precisely because the increase in temperature, together with greater humidity in the environment, creates a breeding ground for them," first deputy mayor and head of the Pest Control area, María del Carmen Menduiña, explained.
The nesting boxes have been strategically placed in parks, gardens, schools and other public green spaces throughout Lorca. Swifts, migratory birds, live almost exclusively in built-up areas during their time in Spain. With voracious appetites, these tiny birds are capable of consuming 55 kilos of insects a year and are an important ally in the fight against summer pests.
The hardy swift usually makes Spain its home during the months of April, May, June, July, August and September.
