The fatal accident happened on the RM-C9 in the Murcia municipality
A 30-year-old lorry driver has died after his truck transporting pigs veered off the RM-C9 in Lorca and plunged two metres into a ravine, flipping onto its roof.
Despite the efforts of fire crews and paramedics, the motorist died a few hours after the crash.
The alarm was raised at around 10.50am on Sunday July 3, with reports the driver was trapped inside the vehicle's cab which was crushed when the vehicle fell into a watercourse close to Lorca's Waste Treatment Centre.
According to emergency sources, rescuers tried to free the driver "as quickly as possible from the front of the lorry", a task which proved extremely difficult "as the lorry was upside down with its wheels up in the air and the space inside the cab was too compressed".
Firefighters also had to deal with the distressing "grunts" and cries from the animals being transported who also needed to be freed. There has been no update on the condition of the pigs or whether any were hurt or killed, and a probe into the cause of the crash has been launched.
Three fire engines, an ambulance and the Guardia Civil were mobilised to deal with the incident.
Fire crews worked for an hour to free the two women from the wreckage, but tragically the passenger died on impact. The crash occurred at a kilometre point PK 647 where there's a change of gradient in the road that leads to a reduction in vision, but the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.
