Luck shines again on Murcia as El Niño lottery shares its joy with Yecla and San Pedro
Two local shops celebrate after selling winning tickets in Spain’s second-biggest lottery draw
The festive season ended on a cheerful note in the Region of Murcia this year as the El Niño Extraordinary Lottery brought a welcome dose of good fortune to two local towns. The winning number, 06703, was sold at El Perolo in San Pedro del Pinatar and at a small bazaar in Plaza San Cayetano, Yecla, giving both businesses plenty of reason to celebrate.
Each winning ticket carries a hefty prize of €200,000, meaning the first prize left at least €400,000 in Murcia alone. “It’s been such a joy to start the year like this,” said one local seller, delighted that the lottery brought smiles across their community. The number was widely distributed across nearly every province in Spain, with only Cantabria, Ceuta and Melilla missing out on a share of the winnings.
While Murcia may have missed the second and third prizes this year, locals still had reason to cheer as some of the top prize money landed close to home. The second prize went to number 45,875, sold in Pontevedra, Almería, Barcelona and Madrid, and the third (32,615) found winners in Burgos and Granada.
Across Spain, sales for the 2026 draw reached a total of €864.6 million, climbing 1.24% from last year. Loterías y Apuestas del Estado, which organises the draw, credited the increase to “player loyalty and the deep-rooted tradition of January 6 throughout the country.” It’s a tradition that seems to hold extra heart in Murcia, where people spent an average of €20.88 per person on tickets; well above the national figure of €18.77.
Last year’s El Niño draw also treated the Region of Murcia kindly, with both the second and third prizes landing in several local towns including Murcia city, Mazarrón, Yecla and San Pedro del Pinatar.
As always, the draw on Tuesday January 6 was presented by the well-known children from Madrid’s San Ildefonso school, who sang out the numbers in the long-standing ceremony that marks the end of Spain’s Christmas celebrations.
For El Perolo and the Yecla bazaar, the new year couldn’t have begun on a brighter note - and for the rest of Murcia, there’s always the hope that next time, luck might strike even closer to home.
