Lorca also activates emergency protocols as PM10 readings soar all over the Region of Murcia
The cloud of mineral dust from north Africa which caused the city of Murcia to activate its Level 2 contamination protocol on Thursday has gone a stage further in Cartagena, where Level 3 status, the maximum level of alert, has been activated.
The level of PM10 particles in the air reached between 130 and 150 micrograms per cubic metre of air at the measuring stations in La Aljorra, Alumbres, Santa Lucía and Escombreras, well over the threshold of 50 micrograms, and in consequence traffic restrictions are in place in the city centre as they are in various other parts of eastern Spain and the Balearics.
In Cartagena the Town Hall is urging residents to help keep the level of pollution down in the following ways:
- Turning the heating down in homes and workplaces.
- Sharing cars or using public transport.
- Driving efficiently, turning the engine off at red traffic lights and avoiding sudden braking and acceleration.
People are also being advised to avoid strenuous exercise in the open air, while the police are doing their best to ensure that traffic flows freely in and around the city centre. Access to the centre is being restricted between 8.30 and 13.30 and loading and unloading is permitted only between 8.30 and 11.00, while restrictions are also being placed on the lighting of fires, building and demolition work, ploughing and the use of leaf blowers.
During Thursday the dust cloud also spread to other parts of the Region of Murcia and in consequence the Town Hall of Lorca has implemented similar measures. In the north-west, meanwhile, the measurement of PM10 in Caravaca soared to over 125 having spent most of the month of January, and some sources forecast that the current episode could last for a few days.
