ARCHIVED - Mayoress of San Pedro del Pinatar tests positive for Covid and councillor is hospitalised
Two councillors from her local government have also been diagnosed with Covid
The mayoress of San Pedro del Pinatar, Visitación Martínez, and two councillors, Ángela Gaona and Javier Castejón, have tested positive for Covid.
Although Sr. Castejón has so far displayed the most serious symptoms and has been admitted to the Los Arcos de San Javier hospital, the mayoress herself tested negative at first and, as she had been inoculated with the single-dose Janssen vaccine, continued with her official duties.
Consequently, the mayoress actually visited one of San Pedro del Pinatar’s vaccination centres last Thursday where she watched more than 2,700 people between the ages of 30 and 59 being vaccinated.
However, over the past weekend she began showing symptoms and a second test showed a positive result, so she is now self-isolating at home.
Sources from San pedro del Pinatar local council fear that the damage had already been done and suggest that the outbreak actually began at the beginning of last week when the major and Councillor Gaona travelled together to Murcia for a work meeting, meeting Sr. Castejón for breakfast.
The same sources report that the mayor is showing only mild symptoms as she quarantines at home, and that, having been hospitalised with suspected respiratory failure, Councillor Javier Castejón is also now recovering well.
The fifth wave, also known as the ‘new wave’ of the coronavirus pandemic in Spain is showing no signs of abating, with the latest Health Emergencies Coordination Centre report showing a total of 1,728 specific outbreaks (as opposed to individual cases) in the week from 5th to 11th July, accounting for 10,529 of the cases reported.
As of Monday evening, the region had administered 1,530,437 vaccines. There are now 710,165 Murcianos fully vaccinated and 169,179 people who have received a single dose.
