ARCHIVED - Migrant traffickers arrested in Cartagena, Mazarrón and Fuente Álamo
20 illegal immigrants were found in safe houses awaiting transport to northern Europe
Over the course of the last year or so the pattern of unauthorized migrants crossing the Mediterranean from north Africa to the coast of southern Spain has started to change, and this has been particularly noticeable in the Murcia region where there has been a considerable increase in the numbers of Algerians crossing to Murcia in organised "waves" of illegal migrants.
Spain has noted a 15 per cent increase in migrant numbers this year, the brunt born by the Canary Islands.
Significant resource is being dedicated to trying to break-up the criminal groups arranging the transport by sea to the Spanish mainland in all areas of Spain, and some success is being achieved by the Giardia Civiíl, with increasingly regular reports of those driving the boats, or meeting the migrants on the Spansih coastline to assist with onward transportation, being detained. A recent example was in Ceuta and Cádiz, where 20 were arrested and a further blow to their organizations on the Spanish mainland has been dealt by the Guardia Civil in the Region of Murcia with the arrests of over 20 people involved in transporting migrants on small “patera” boats and then by road to northern Europe.
The Guardia swoop which began on Wednesday morning remains open and further arrests have not been ruled out, but it has already been confirmed that those detained were involved in providing “safe housing” for migrants after they reached the Costa Cálida, giving them temporary accommodation before they continued their journeys to elsewhere in Europe, principally France and Belgium. House searches have been carried out in the municipalities of Cartagena, Fuente Álamo and Mazarrón, and drugs, mobile phones and documentation have been confiscated.
Also detained are around twenty illegal migrants who were awaiting transport to other countries. Each of them is reported to have paid the “mafias” between 1,500 and 2,000 for the Mediterranean crossing, plus another 300 euros for car transport to northern Europe.
